Should I lower the water level of my pond in winter?

People sometimes wrongly suggest that pond water levels should be reduced in winter to avoid overflowing. We strongly recommend you do not do this, as you may be putting your fish and wildlife at risk!

If you are worried about your pond overflowing due to the winter rains simply install an overflow pipe.

If you reduce the water level, you may put the survival of your fish and wildlife at risk.

Only with sufficient depth can a pond form a ‘thermocline’. This is where a warmer layer of water forms in the deeper area. 

Fish and wildlife retreat to this warmer water, which is essential for their well-being.

If thick ice forms, you also ensure there is plenty of water underneath for fish to swim in.
