Should I feed my fish during winter?

You should not feed your fish during winter when the water is cold. Unlike us, fish are generally just fine going without food over the winter months.

As the metabolic rates of your fish slow down during winter so too does their energy expenditure. By spring they are likely to be looking somewhat thinner, but they will soon pack on weight once they begin feeding again.

Most ornamental freshwater fish lose interest in feeding when water temperatures drop below 10°C. As their metabolisms slow down they also begin to find it hard to digest normal fish food. Alternative feeds such as wheat germ may be used that are more easily digested. However these can still only be fed while water temperatures exceed 5°C.

It is therefore good practice to have a suitable pond thermometer handy to test the water before introducing any feed. Even so, feed just a little at a time, and if it is not taken readily, do not feed any more.
