Pond liner FAQs

What are pond liners?

Pond liners are supple and flexible waterproof sheets, placed into the bottom of a dug out area in order to form a pond.

Why do I need a pond liner?

Most soil types are permeable, and water fed into a newly dug hole will simply drain away. Pond liners create an impermeable barrier to keep the water in. They are relatively cheap compared to alternative pond tanking solutions and very easy to install.

What are pond liners made of?

Pond liners are made of PVC or rubber. Both materials are supplied in flexible sheets or rolls. PVC pond liners are cheaper but rubber liners are stronger and last longer.

Why choose a PVC pond liner?

The main benefit of PVC pond liners is that are cheaper than rubber pond liners. They have fair resistance to UV damage and punctures. Although not as durable as rubber pond liners, they are excellent value for money. They are suitable for smaller, sheltered ponds that won’t be exposed to excessive wear and tear, such as from children, pets, or falling branches.

Why choose a rubber pond liner?

We recommend rubber pond liners for most pond builds. They are more durable than PVC liners, and less likely to puncture over time. They are 100% UV and frost resistant, and generally a lot thicker. Their supple and stretchy nature makes them very easy to install, and ensures plenty of ‘give’ as they bed in. For most applications we recommend opting for a rubber pond liner over a PVC one.

What are the best rubber pond liners?

The best rubber pond liners are made from EPDM or butyl. They have identical properties. Butyl rubber liners are made from natural rubber whereas EPDM is man-made. EPDM is far more popular these days as it is cheaper to produce. We supply two types of EPDM rubber pond liner: our standard PondEasy Rubber Pond Liners and our premium grade Elevate Pond Liners (formerly known as ‘Firestone’).

How thick should my pond liner be?

The simple answer is ‘the thicker the better’. For smaller ponds, our 0.5mm thickness PVC pond liners are a cost-effective choice. For more strength and durability we recommend a thicker EPDM rubber pond liner. Our standard PondEasy rubber pond liners are made from 0.8mm thickness EPDM, and our premium grade Elevate pond liners are made from 1mm thickness EPDM.

How long do pond liners last?

Pond liners can last for 20 years plus provided they are installed with care. EPDM rubber pond liners tend to last a lot longer than PVC ones as they are more resistant to UV from sunlight and frost damage over time.

What does my pond liner guarantee cover?

As with all pond liners sold in the UK, our range carry manufacturers guarantees against UV damage, but not punctures.

Do I need pond liner underlay?

No matter which pond liner you choose, it is important to install a good quality geotextile pond liner underlay underneath. This underlay protects your liner from roots, sharp stones and objects, and reduces localised stretching over time. It is the best way to help ensure a long life for your pond liner.
