Our aquaSHIELD Pond Liner Underlay is a high quality 200gsm, non-woven polypropylene geotextile underlay for use with all types of pond liner.

Although often overlooked, the quality of your pond liner underlay is just as important as the pond liner itself. A protective layer of underlay should be installed prior to your new pond liner of choice. Underlay not only shields your pond liner from sharp stones and roots, but also helps prevent localised stretching that can occur over time.

When it comes to pond liner underlay, only a proper geotextile will do. Always avoid cheap ‘fleece’ underlays as these have a tendency to tear and stretch. Quality underlay will always have a weight (rather than a thickness) associated with it. The greater the weight (usually measured in gsm – grams per square meter) the more protection is provided.

Our 200gsm aquaSHIELD is suitable for small and medium sized ponds. However for koi ponds and larger ponds, or for an ‘overlay’, our aquaSHIELD Heavy Duty Pond Liner Underlay with a weight of 275gsm is recommended.

AquaSHIELD pond liner underlay is supplied in 2m wide lengths that can be cut into sections using sharp scissors or a stanley knife for easy installation. Individual pieces should overlap by at least 10cm to ensure a continuous protective layer.
