POND FILTERS

Pond filters come in a variety of designs suited to different pond sizes. They contain special filter media upon which natural bacteria live. As pond water passes through the media, the bacteria break down organic waste rendering it harmless. Pond filters also remove solid waste from your pond.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a pond filter?

Pond filters are important for maintaining a clean and healthy pond. They break down toxic dissolved organic waste rendering it harmless, and also harvest solid waste.

Both wildlife and fish ponds benefit greatly from filtration. We have filters to suit any size or type of pond. If you need help choosing the right filter for your pond please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

What type of pond filter do I need?

There are several types of pond filter to choose from:

  • In-pond filters are pond pumps with integrated UVs and filters that are submerged into your pond. They are suitable for small ponds and water features.
  • Pressure filters have the advantage that they can be positioned at any height above or below the level of your pond. They can also be partially buried into the ground to hide them. They have integrated UVs but require a filter pump to supply them with pond water.
  • Flow through filters are often called ‘box filters’. They are a traditional design and perform well. The main benefits of flow through filters are easy access to filter media and good value for money. They must be positioned above pond level and return filtered water by gravity. They should be partnered with a filter pump and UV clarifier.
  • Drum filters represent the very latest technology in pond filters. Drum filters are mechnical filters that remove all solid particles larger than a human hair! They are ideal for larger goldfish ponds, koi ponds, and swim ponds. They are combined with a moving bed filter in one unit, or are connected to moving bed modules to break down dissolved organic waste.
  • Moving bed filters are exceptionally efficient biological filters. They contain hundreds of small plastic filter media which are colonized by bacteria. These bacteria break down dissolved organic waste rendering it harmless.
